Turns out they are Pigeon Guillemots (Gill-uh-mot), a member of the Auk family of feathered dinosaurs. Not only do they have a very bright red endothelial lining in their little mouths… they also have the reddest feet.

There’s even a Salish Sea Guillemot Network in Washington State:

Well… the Great Auk is no longer with us, but this little Aukette is. Best not to have Great as part of your name it seems…
Who’s swimming in your bay / pond / lake / park / zoo…?
I’d like to snap a photo of their little red feet. Bet I could get a good one.
