In a previous blog post I wrote sometime back in June 2021, I incorporated a few quotes attributed to old Ben Franklin. He was not too fond of eagles or their place in the collective American mythos. Not to undermine old Ben’s reasoned brilliance and stated assertions about why the turkey would have been a better national symbol than the eagle… I’ll move on.
I can state that eagles are impressive flyers and do have a piercing gaze if you are close enough to study it. Just yesterday… Les and I were hiking at Fort Flagler with Leo prancing about and we heard a loud “whoosh”… right over our heads and saw the huge wingspan and the white tail of an adult eagle flying away from us no further than 2 meters above our heads and 3 meters away. An impressive dive bombing bird it was. We are sure that Leo was his goal, and he/she decided that the humans were too close and the furry creature at our feet, too large to attack and carry back to its lair. Lucky us. Lucky Leo. We followed the birds flight and located it in a Douglas fir about 10 meters away, gazing down at us… as mesmerized by us as we were by it.

This morning I was gazing out the Port windows of Great Northern facing the dock, sipping my morning coffee laced with heavy cream and there it was… Standing on a dock box 20 feet away, just examining its surroundings:

Just another day in the life of fixing our boat in exotic places, eh?
What a wonderful gift.
Thanks Blair!
