A Photogenic Tapestry: Waiatt Harbour and the Octopus Islands, Quadra Island, BC, Canada; August 2023

Dawn light. Waiatt Bay. Looking East to Okisollo Channel
Couldn’t resist sharing just one more of such ethereal morning light in Waiatt Bay
Great Northern. Waiatt Bay looking towards the West
Waiatt Bay looking West. Labor Day weekend. Shoulder season.
Western Waiatt Bay
Les paddling through one of the arms of the Octopus Islands
The bow of my kayak pointing to an ancient clam garden
Closer to the clam garden wall… The outer rock barriers, placed by humans, and now covered with seaweed, trap seawater, sediment etc., providing an ideal nursery for clams. Clams were an important source of dietary protein that were quite easy to “catch”. Especially if you built them a nice nest…

Throughout the millennia… going back 1500 or 3500 years depending on which group of scientists are reporting… First Nations tribes were farming clams, and many fish species. The clam gardens are fascinating structures. And… they can be found all around the different tribal areas in British Colombia waters. The gardens are being studied, some are being rebuilt by First Nations tribes. (for more information: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clam_garden)

Just another pretty place… an empty intimate cove in the Octopus Islands

That’s it for now. Gentle winds and smooth seas…
