PNW Shoulder Season Cruise, 2023

We departed Ludlow on August 15th… and had an uneventful passage (the best kind) to Hunter Bay on Lopez Island. All systems go. Engines, gensets, electronics, battery banks… mission parameters: nominal. Our first morning in Hunter Bay looking out Lopez Passage towards Rosario Stait:

This says it all…

Off to Friday Harbor for fuel… then to one of our favorite anchorages: Reid Harbor on Stuart Island for the excellent hiking out to Turn Point Lighthouse and environs.

The evening balm of Reid Harbor…

On the 21st we departed Reid and made our way back to Friday Harbor to stock up on the essentials: Human food, wine, and dog food. We were getting ready for the big jump to Canada. (Not that they didn’t have dog food there!)

We checked in at the Port of Sidney and made off to Nanaimo for the night and in the morning we raised anchor and pointed the bow North. Damn the torpedoes… full steam ahead!

We are now in Tribune Bay on Hornsby Island… a place we’ve visited before. It is different now compared to last time. The Bay is not filled with party happy weekenders for the most part. There are sturdy ketches, schooners and cutters with strong, dependable offshore gear. Most of the powerboats are capable trawlers like ours. Oh… there are a few weekenders, but for the most part those are the minority.

Tribune Bay

Tomorrow… another 6 hours and we will be in the “Discoveries”… Just west of Desolation Sound. Quadra Island is sounding pretty good…
